Damian C. has made some very nice comments about 'C&C'. His comment about Sharon's plan offers me the occasion to mention the first intifadeh. It's not the one that started in the late 1980s but the one that broke out in 1936, after the failure of a British plan for power-sharing in Mandate Palestine. The Palestinian Arabs fought for three years but were eventually beaten by a combination of British forces and internal bloodletting (the story is complicated, but the short version is that the Husseini clan and the Nashashibi clan fell out). Afterwards, though, the British government brought in the White Paper of 1939 which strictly limited future Jewish immigration. The war and Holocaust rendered it a dead letter, but in the context it was a fairly clear application of the model.
